USA. From the port of Mayport in Florida, the “Southern Seas 2024” deployment began on May 1 with the departure of “Carrier Strike Group 10” (CSG 10), made up of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), the destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) and support ship USNS John Lenthall (T-AO-189).

“Southern Seas” is part of the US SOUTHCOM Initiative that seeks to increase interoperability and strengthen ties with the maritime forces of friendly countries. “Southern Seas 2024” marks the tenth mission to the region since 2007 and the third time involving the USS George Washington. The aircraft carrier was also deployed in the 2008 and 2015 versions of the exercise.

In this context, the Chilean Navy plays a key role, with the participation of Lieutenant Commander Sergio Abarzua and 1st Lieutenant Pablo Magna, who make up the multinational team of 19 officers from 13 different countries (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, United States, Great Britain, Holland, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago and Uruguay). This team is in charge of supporting the planning and execution of the naval and air operations that will take place during the movement of CSG 10 to the Pacific area.

Additionally, Commander Rodrigo Agüero, currently an International Fellow at the US Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, Rhode Island, was invited to join the NWC faculty who provided instruction during the CSG’s first sailing week. 10. This group of teachers had the task of providing theoretical and practical guidance to the officers who make up the embarked multinational team, thus facilitating their rapid integration and the standardization of operational planning procedures.

Commander Agüero expressed his pride in being part of the NWC teaching team, highlighting the unique opportunity to teach classes aboard an aircraft carrier to officers from various countries, which poses significant challenges and strengthens the institutional image of the Chilean Navy in operations. international. Furthermore, he stressed that participation in “Southern Seas 2024” represents not only an opportunity to continue demonstrating the competence and professionalism of Chilean officers, but also to continue strengthening experience in international operations.

The “Southern Seas 2024” deployment will include joint exercises and operations at sea with the maritime forces of countries in South America, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay, with scheduled visits to ports in Brazil, Chile and Peru. With this action, the Chilean Navy reinforces its commitment to promoting international cooperation and supporting foreign policy.
