The Chamber of Deputies supported the Executive’s request to extend the decree that gives continuity to the protection carried out by the Armed Forces in the Border Zone Areas of the regions of Arica-Parinacota, Tarapacá and Antofagasta.

The Chamber of the Lower House extended the border protection for a new period of 90 days, after adding 121 votes in favor, 8 against and 7 abstentions.

The measure has allowed 870 people to be detained, between February 2023 and May 5 of this year, as a result of the application of the critical infrastructure system in the Northern Macrozone of the country.

According to a report delivered by the Executive to the Corporation Chamber, 241,540 people have been controlled. Most of these in the Tarapacá region, 22% in Arica and Parinacota and 3% in Antofagasta. Now, as for the arrests, 49% were for misdemeanors and 51% for crimes.

In the first 430 days considered for the analysis of the effectiveness of the decree, the number of people detected clandestinely entering the national territory has decreased by 3% compared to the same previous period. Likewise, a 15% drop in income detected by Colchane stands out, while in Chacalluta it increased by 102%.

Since the entry into force of the measure, 8,839 tasks have been carried out, of which 69% correspond to land patrols. In addition, 54% of the total tasks carried out were executed in the Arica and Parinacota region, 27% in Tarapacá and 19% in Antofagasta.
