Santiago de Chile, May 15 (EFE).- The Government of Chile “strongly” condemned this Wednesday the attack against the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, and showed its rejection of “all forms of violence that threaten democracy.”

“Along with carefully monitoring the evolution of his status, the Government of Chile expresses its solidarity with the Slovak Government and people, and wishes the Prime Minister a speedy recovery,” the Chilean Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Fico was shot after a meeting of his Executive in the city of Handlová, when he greeted a small group of citizens.

The prime minister fell to the ground and his security team immediately took him to a vehicle to take him to a hospital.

The alleged attacker was detained by security forces and the police cordoned off the area.

Defense Minister Robert Kaliniak said at a press conference that Fico’s health condition is “extremely serious” and that he is undergoing a “very complicated” operation at the Roosevelt Hospital in Banská Bystrica.

There is no doubt that it was an attack with a political background,” added Kalinak, who places the attack in the context of “an inability to accept the will of society.”

Fico, 59, who has governed since last October and is politically close to the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, is a very controversial and polarizing figure in Slovakia. EFE
