The Executive Committee of National Interuniversity Council (CIN) met today in the city of Buenos Aires to continue analyzing the complicated budget situation of public universities throughout the country.

The rector of the National University of Cuyo, Esther Sanchezwho at the end of the meeting analyzed the complex panorama.

“The proposal of the National Interuniversity Council is that it does not take into account here that we are a federal republic, because when it comes to the facts and responding to all the universities, only the University of Buenos Aires is taken into account. This implies that of the total number of students in the university system, more than 2 million students, approximately 300,000 are from the UBA and the rest – more than 1,700,000 students – correspond to universities throughout the country, located in different cities of the country.

“This implies that more than 85% of the students are considered second category, while UBA students are considered first category, solving the needs posed by the entire university system and granted exclusively to the UBA,” evaluated the Rector.

Sanchez clarified that “it is not only the issue of operating expenses that needs to be resolved. In the case of universities that have hospitals, it is to keep those values updated. There are also other aspects that are extremely relevant and have to do with decent salaries. for our teachers and non-teachers, with updated scholarships, with maintaining the science and technology system. All of these are aspects that have been raised and have not yet been answered.

“We ask for dialogue, but we also ask for equal treatment of all universities,” concluded the highest authority of UNCUYO.

The National Interuniversity Council, through its Executive Committee, decided to remain in permanent session waiting to have a response to the demand for equal treatment given to the University of Buenos Aires.

The CIN statement

The update of 270 percent of the budget for operating expenses and 300 percent for hospitals at the University of Buenos Aires implies the recognition by the national government of one of the aspects of the problem – and its serious magnitude – that all The university system has been proposing since January of this year.

It is unacceptable and provocative that it is recognized only for one university and not for the entire system that brings together a group of 60 universities throughout the country, representing two million students from Argentine universities. We will not accept that there are first and second year students.

Therefore, the government having confirmed with its actions that the resources are there, we immediately demand a resolution that guarantees an increase equal to that granted to the University of Buenos Aires for all public universities in the Nation.

With the same urgency, we will continue to fight for equality for university workers to compensate for the loss of purchasing power of salaries, for the maintenance and strengthening of the scientific and technological system, for updating the amount allocated to student scholarships and for the recovery of infrastructure works that are currently paralyzed.

We reject any methodology that promotes division between universities and within universities. We will not validate any attempt at division, nor will we ever prioritize any shortcut. The National Interuniversity Council (CIN) does not give up what it believes. It is not only a problem of resources, it is also a problem of principles.

Meeting at the CIN headquarters in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, the Executive Committee resolves to remain in permanent session awaiting an urgent response to this request and, if there is none, define the actions to follow in defense of the Public University Argentina.
