The Province detected irregularities in 25 percent of soup kitchens and picnic areas in Santa Fe, after auditing 50 percent of the total. The situation of the other half still remains to be verified. These are the agreements signed during the previous government administration.

In cases with irregularities “we always find ourselves with the same situation,” said Sergio Basile, secretary of Territorial Development of the Ministry of Equality and Human Development of Santa Fe. “The canteens are not there, the owner is not there, they are not up to date, or the addresses change,” he listed. Consequently, in each case “the games are suspended, the institutions are summoned and, if they are not ordered, they are canceled,” he explained in dialogue with El Litoral. “And in cases where it warrants, we have made judicial presentations.”

The audit reviews the three current lines of social assistance granted by the provincial government: the so-called Institutional Card, the Social Nutritional Program (PROSONU) and the Single Citizenship Card. “The majority of the irregularities were detected in the first two assistance programs,” said Basile, and “the majority of the cases are also in Rosario or San Lorenzo, that is, in the southern province; although we also detected some cases in the city of Santa Fe.”

“We found places where there was nothing, where the institution that appeared in the papers did not exist,” explained the official, who later added that for that reason “we followed up on those complaints,” while in other cases “there were surrenders that were not reported.” they did for months.”

“There are more than 800 agreed institutions, of which we surveyed 400 and more than 180 were suspended because irregularities were detected,” the official put into figures. He also highlighted that “from the audit” they see “month by month where people’s greatest demand is.” In that sense, Basile highlighted that they reinforced the assistance amounts by 80 percent at the beginning of the administration and another 25 percent in May. In this way, the government assists around 325,000 people daily in nutritional matters throughout the province.

“We implemented an efficiency control so that help reaches those who really need it,” the Minister of Equality and Human Development, Victoria Tejeda, had said last February, when the first complaints were made known.

Then came the inflationary escalation that had a hard impact on the food sector. For this reason, “it is true that every day there is more demand and the provincial government does everything with its own investment because national resources do not arrive,” Basile concluded.

It is worth mentioning that at the national level, the government of Javier Milei has been carrying out a similar audit in the State, the result of which showed that “50 percent of the registered canteens were non-existent”, according to the RENACOM report (National Registry of Canteens and Picnic Areas). Community Organizations of Civil Society), ordered by the Ministry of Human Capital. For this reason there were raids and reports of extortion. This helpline is carried out through the so-called “Argentine National Plan against Hunger”, created in 2020 to guarantee access to food and services for picnic areas and community kitchens.
