The San José Fire Department is looking for women to enlist to be part of the team, so this Saturday they will be offering training.

Although historically being a firefighter is considered a man’s job, the department wants to break the stereotype and show women that they can do it too.

“In our department we have more than 600 members and within them we have 24 women and less than 1% are Latinas,” said Merlina San Nicolás, spokesperson for the fire department.

Among this number of women on the force is Stephanie Cerini, who will be one of the trainers participating in the one-day women’s camp to show them what it is like to be a firefighter.

“When I started my training in the department, when I was 15 years old, there was no program like this so I had to face the challenges alone, so now I am honored to be able to serve as an example and mentor the 75 women who will participate in the training this Saturday,” said Cerini.

This is the fifth time they have held this event, which lasts four hours in which in addition to guiding them in a career in the fire department, they also participate in physical strength training that they normally must undergo to join the forces.

Merlina explained that she is going for the first time this year to participate with the attendees.

“I am going to take the test and go to the training, and I am very excited because it is also a test for me and I invite you to be encouraged, to go with an open mind and try it. It is for women or people who identify as women. It is in the park center training”, stated Merlina.

The event is for those over 18 years of age, although places were filled three hours after opening calls in April.

“Even though our quotas are full, I invite all the women who are interested and want to spend time with our female firefighters to come,” said Merlina.

The department is recruiting women throughout the year so even if you can’t make it on Saturday, email [email protected] where you can start the process.
