In Cauca and Antioquia, children are dying from ARI

In the last hours it was known by the National Institute of Health (INS)that in Colombia there are currently 181 cases of probable deaths in children under 5 years of age due to Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI)where 44 were confirmed deaths, 24 were ruled out and 113 are under study.

This situation is very worrying for national authorities, given that in 2023 there were only a total of 113 cases of ARI, distributed in different departments of the country, which have a tendency to abrupt changes in climate each month.

The entity stated that the main respiratory diseases were rhinovirus, SARS-CoV2enterovirus, adenovirus, staphylococcus aureus, respiratory syncytial virus, metapneumovirus, pseudomona aeruginosa and moraxella catarrhalis, which occur to a greater extent in the young population.

Likewise, the report indicates that the municipalities where these respiratory diseases are most affected are Chocó, Quindío, Risaralda, Santander, Bogotá, Antioquia and Norte Santander. Likewise, at the municipal level, cases were presented in Bojayá, Tadó, Ibagué, Uribia and Medellín.

Meanwhile, he highlighted that younger children are the ones most affected, and where there are the most consultations among them, indicating that from two to four years old, 14.6% are checked for these diseases, followed by one-year-old children (14, 1 %).

Finally, the report closes that in the study among 100,000 inhabitants, they show an exponential increase during the last epidemiological weeks, so much so that during the entire country it showed that a total of 157,852 outpatient consultations and emergencies for Acute Respiratory Infections were reported. in recent times.

What are the care for ARI?

The Ministry of Health expressed its concern with this type of illness, which is why it highlights that with children under 5 years of age, different types of care must be provided, which are:

  • – Provide fractionated foods and liquids in small quantities
  • – Use pharyngeal lubricating liquids. (Hot drinks)
  • – Keep the nasal passages clean
  • – Avoid temperature changes
  • – Wash your hands frequently
  • – Identify warning signs

Finally, the entity highlighted that it is necessary to maintain the alarm signs with minors when they have accelerated breathing, seizures, stop drinking liquids and food, vomit everything, bad odor in the ear and pain in this same area.
