The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, announced that Spain has called its ambassador in Buenos Aires for consultations ‘sine die’.

President Javier Milei, who maintains a largely political agenda in the peninsular country, described Begoña Gómez, wife of the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, as “corrupt” during the right-wing “Viva 2024” summit of the Vox party.

However the verbal pyrotechnics between representatives of both countries grew as the days went by when it was known that Milei would arrive at the summit that took place in Madrid.

Albares, who appeared without questions from the Moncloa Palace, described these words as a “frontal attack” on democracy and more so “between two peoples united by ties of brotherhood.”

He also asked that the Argentine president “rectify” statements that “overcome any type of political and ideological difference” and “are unprecedented in the history of relations between two countries and two peoples united by strong ties of brotherhood.”

As Albares has pointed out, prior to this decision he has contacted all the parliamentary spokespersons “to obtain their support for this statement” and has said that he had received it “from a large majority”, although he has specified that the Popular Party and VOX “have not pronounced yet.”
