An alert note from the Provincial Health Directorate in Santiago de Cuba draws attention to the sudden increase in reports of patients with “nonspecific” febrile syndromes.

According to the statement published by the health institution on Facebook, the cases were reported between May 12 and 18 and the most affected territories are the municipality of Songo-La Maya, and the Carlos J. Finlay and Carlos J. Finlay health areas. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, both located in the main municipality of Santiago de Cuba.

“The clinical picture of the patients is characterized by headache, fever, general malaise, loss of appetite and muscle pain,” the note indicates.

Likewise, the text points out that the evolution of the patients is good and that the resolution of the clinical picture is between the fourth and fifth day of the disease. This Monday, eight patients remained hospitalized with a favorable evolution and no serious cases have occurred.

Health authorities are intensifying the active search for cases through laboratory research and surveillance, the text highlights. Working groups were also created to manage the situation.

The studies to determine the cause of this event are led by the Reference Laboratory of the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine, to which the samples were sent.

“Due to the evolution and epidemiological pattern, it corresponds to a disease of viral etiology,” the Health Directorate stated.

“It is recommended to the population that, given the high temperatures, proximity of summer and occurrence of rain, factors that generate circulation of pathogenic agents that cause diseases, hygienic and sanitary measures be increased,” he adds.

Among these, he mentions frequent hand washing, proper cooking of food and cleaning patios and roofs. In addition, it is recommended to go to the doctor immediately if you have any symptoms.
