HUNDRED FIRES.–The Rita Suárez del Villar nursing home, located in the Lajitas area, in the municipality of Cienfuegos, is one of the most recent health facilities in this territory, which houses 60 grandparents who, according to Dr. Caridad, González Aragón, receive prioritized attention.

The specialist in Family Medicine and Geriatrics and Gerontology pointed out that, for the most part, they are fragile adults who, socially, have a problem that makes them dependent at a certain moment. Their entry to the institution may be at their own request, through consultations, because they have been left alone or suffer from depression, she added.

In the opinion of the master in Satisfactory Longevity, the main goal of the residents in this type of facility is to receive help in all aspects, both physically and spiritually, so that they feel supported, humanly and socially.

Regarding the creation of a favorable environment for coexistence in the Home, there are many testimonies in favor. Who better to testify on the subject than Carmen Ruiz Domínguez, who has earned the trust, the respect and admiration of her large family, as she calls it, for her leadership as president of the Council of Elders?

Carmen maintained that, like the rest of the Cubans, they are not exempt from material difficulties, but in the face of each obstacle they grow. “This is a fundamental premise to feel the best possible, in this, our house,” she appreciated.

Perhaps Rafael Mesa González, another of the residents at Rita Suárez, is the bearer of the feelings of the majority of those who enjoy these benefits. He stated that, as a Christian, he thanks God for this salvation, but as a Cuban he recognizes that this is a great act of love, for the treatment that everyone receives at the center.

Nursing graduate Yordanka Alonso Martín worked as a pediatric nurse in her native Camagüey, and now, due to necessity, she revealed, she had to adapt to geriatrics, with 24-hour shifts. Little by little she has been learning about the characteristics of what many consider second childhood, she shared.

In Dr. Dainer Pérez Santos’ projections it was never possible to direct an institution with these characteristics. He always imagined his career attached to the specialty of Comprehensive General Medicine in primary health care in some office in his homeland, Ciego de Ávila; but life takes many turns, and overnight the young doctor found himself fulfilling an internationalist medical mission in Venezuela, later occupying positions in the directorate of Hygiene and Epidemiology in the municipality of Cienfuegos, then in the directorate of the Health area number one in this region, and now here.

Despite the short time he has been at the head of the institution, Dainer already has full control of the operation of the area, which is why he referred to the steps and requirements to enter the Home. He pointed out that, in order to enter, applicants must have both physical and mental validity, and the admission process begins in the Health area, with the participation of the social worker and the specialized team at the municipal level.

The home has four modules with personal and double rooms. In addition, it has a kitchen-dining room service, a living room with a television, a park area for recreation, a passive games and reading room, as well as an infirmary with an observation room for emergencies and medical consultation, with daily assistance. of the physician, and if necessary, appointments are made with specialists, depending on the pathology.

The objective, achieved, is for the elderly to live in the best possible conditions in this, their second home.
