The Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (Icbf) in La Guajira presented to the Ombudsman of the Department and Persons of Riohacha, a report on early childhood care and the projection of investment, particularly in the Own Model of Comprehensive Care to the Wayuu People.

The regional director in charge of the Icbf in La Guajira, Rodrigo Daza, highlighted the achievements such as the doubling of investment and the expansion of care to more than 200,000 boys, girls, families, migrant and returnee populations in the four municipalities sentenced in the T-302 of 2017.

Likewise, he reported that the Icbf participates daily in a Nutritional Emergency Committee to identify possible cases and provide active monitoring, guaranteeing the stabilization and recovery of boys and girls.

In relation to the Guide to the Wayuu Own Model, the concerns of the Ombudsman’s Office regarding the proposal of food security and sovereignty were resolved, explaining that it is included in the program, it has autonomy to decide how to receive food, either through from a community kitchen or through the delivery of food rations to prepare at home, with the majority preference being direct care.

“Each Care Unit has 6 Food Managers who provide support, while the supervision teams constantly verify to ensure the correct process,” said the director in charge of the regional unit.

In response to the question asked by the Ombudsman about care in Riohacha, Rodrigo Daza confirmed that 100% of the services in the Community Welfare Homes, Children’s Homes and Community Care Units of the capital of Guajira are contracted.

Finally, the Icbf thanked the report on the situation in the garbage dumps in the Las Marías sector in Comuna 10 of Riohacha, where three units provided care and a case of child labor was identified, activating the corresponding route.

The regional director emphasized the importance of maintaining these spaces for dialogue and exchange of information to coordinate actions for the benefit of Guajiro children.
