More of 570 people from the La Toma sectorin the municipality of Suarez (Cauca)are taking refuge in a church after fleeing due to the intense fighting between the National Army and the FARC dissidents.

In accordance with José Luis Ambuilacoordinator of the maroon guard, the same families asked their leaders for help through calls and messages on social networks to get out of the fighting and then settle in the Christian church in the sector of The sorrow.

“The communities themselves asked the guard for help, that’s why we arrived at the sector, despite the fighting, to attend to it, calm them down and then help them leave their houses because the machine gun fire and explosions were very strong,” said the social leader.

Afterwards, and thanks to the support of humanitarian entities and medical missionsthese families received food, toiletries and other items, such as mattresses, so they could spend the night in this religious center.

Other entities and regional authorities are expected to provide more support to these communities, while the Army tries to regain control of this rural town in the Suarez.

“What we ask is that the area be swept because we know that there are many explosives on the roads that did not explode and that represents a risk for the population, especially for children, that is why we do not let them leave this Christian center.” added José Luis Ambuila when calling for the fighting to stop.

A similar situation is recorded in the neighboring municipality of Santander de Quilichaowhere the indigenous authorities and governors ordered the suspension of classes in educational institutions in the rural area to protect the children and young people of the area, thus preventing them from being caught in the middle of confrontations.
