This Wednesday, May 22, inside the ARC Simón Bolívar ship, the first phase of exploration of the San José Galleon was launched, which shipwrecked more than 300 years ago in the Caribbean off Cartagena.

The place was favorable to declare the area where the galleon co as the first maritime protected archaeological area in Colombia, as announced by the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICAHN).

The Minister of Culture, Juan David Correa, assured that, by declaring an area of ​​submerged archaeological heritage, like that of the galleon in San José, There will be a special plan for underwater management, which becomes a historic fact because it had not been done at such a depth.

The minister explained that everything that is submerged there more than 600 meters deep, “belongs to us in a deep, spiritual sense; It belongs to humanity in a deep, spiritual sense. Let us hope that the care is to have a true conscience about these matters. There are many people who are still motivated by greed in the world and want to put ships in, who want to do greedy extractive companies, believing that this has an economic price and ignoring this value that we are giving in this launch of the Towards the Heart of the Galleon campaign. Saint Joseph”.

It is expected that, in the coming days, this expedition will go to the area where the Galleon is located, with more than 40 people who will crew the ARC Simón Bolívar, with professional scientific experts, who will allow this exploration work to be carried out that will be non-intrusive.

The minister had said it, 16 billion pesos will be invested, which will be made available by the national navy and the ministry of culture. Which will be necessary to finance the exploration, the recording resources, the laboratory equipment and all the pertinent work carried out in this space.

He also warned that, since this area where the San José Galleon is located is declared a protected archaeological area, no one could interfere in this exploration or, failing that, in this aquatic space, because they could lead to serious crimes.
