President Gustavo Petro, on March 17, decided to suspend the ceasefire with this guerrilla bloc and since then there has been a frontal fight between the Public Force and the dissidents in the departments of Nariño, Valle and Cauca.

In the midst of the difficult public order situation that affects Cauca, this Thursday President Gustavo Petro is scheduled to arrive in Popayán to lead a security council to adopt measures to confront the wave of insecurity and attacks that affect Cauca. the region.

During his visit, the president is also scheduled to hold a meeting with the Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca (CRIC).

His arrival responds to events such as the harassment of the Police station by dissidents of the Central General Staff (EMC) in the municipality of Morales and other areas of the department. Precisely, after these attacks, Petro ordered the displacement of the military leadership to the region.

“The offensive against the EMC in Cauca is total,” said the president, who described the situation in the department as “unacceptable.” “We will not tolerate continuing to terrorize the population with terrorist attacks,” he warned.

Only on Monday, Petro decided to change the command of the National Army. In this way, General Luis Mauricio Ospina was called to qualify services and Major General Luis Emilio Cardozo will take over as his replacement.

Major General Cardozo had been called to qualify services in the first sweep of generals carried out by Gustavo Petro’s government. The official was recalled from retirement to take over the reins of the institution.

To reinforce security in Cauca, the Ministry of Defense arranged a platoon of professional soldiers from the 29th Brigade that will arrive in Morales, also seeking to provide peace of mind to the communities. “The message is clear: all the capabilities of the Public Force are focused on stabilizing this area of ​​Cauca to protect the communities,” said the head of the portfolio, Iván Velásquez.

The EMC dissidents, documented by the Peace and Reconciliation Foundation, are present in 41 of the 42 municipalities of Cauca and have turned that department into a cocktail of conflicts in which they confront, at the same time, the Public Force, the ELN and the Second Marquetalia.

The Western Bloc of the EMC is commanded by alias Iván Mordisco, a leader who walked away from the dialogue table with the National Government. This insurgent cell would have 2,400 men under its power.
