With emergency security measures they were sheltered 20 directors of penitentiary establishments in the country, according to the National Protection Unit (UNP).

The state entity reported that, following threats against the staff of the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (Inpec) and the recent murder of the director of the La Modelo prison in Bogotá, the decision was made to implement protective measures for 12 of those directors, that did not have them before, among which are La Picota (Bogotá) and Pedregal (Medellín).

Four others, who already had some level of protection, they are going to strengthen them. Among them are the prison directors of Meta and Cauca.

And the remaining four ratified the security scheme they already hadaccording to the UNP, as well as the director of the Western Regional and the director of the Cúcuta prison.

Last week, after the assassination of Colonel (r) Élmer Fernández (May 16)the national director of Inpec, Colonel Daniel Gutiérrez, declared that there are 506 officials of his institution under threat and that 27 of them are prison directors.

The UNP also reported that, so far in 2024, has attended to 89 protection requests presented by Inpec. Currently, the UNP has assigned protection schemes to 10,070 citizens in general, of which 3,879 are social leaders.
