Havana, – The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today conveyed condolences to family and friends of the prominent baseball player Sol Miguel Cuevas, known as Don Miguel, whom he described as a fearsome slugger in the National Series.

He will be remembered for the timely offensive with a wooden bat and study of the opponent, he noted.

Sol Miguel Cuevas died today at the age of 89, reported the Cuban Baseball Federation.

During his successful career with the Azucareros, Orientales, Granjeros and Camagüey teams, he left an offensive average of .279 with 880 hits, including 127 hits, 17 triples and 83 home runs.

He participated in 10 foreign events representing Cuba and in the 1963 Pan American Games he hit three home runs in the same game, a record that remains in force for those tournaments.

He was at bat 61 times in international competitions where he had 22 hits, including six doubles, two triples and five home runs with 16 RBIs.
