Rebel Youth.- Cuban health workers have served the most needy populations, consulted more than 2.255 million people, performed more than 16 million surgeries and have assisted in more than five million births.

The Minister of Health of Cuba, Dr. José Ángel Portal Miranda, highlighted that more than 600,000 Cuban health professionals have offered their services with sensitivity, heroism, dedication and professionalism around the world on the 61st anniversary of the Cuban International Medical Collaboration, and praised the actions of love and solidarity carried out by these talented and dedicated specialists in other lands.

Dr. Michael Cabrera, director of the Central Medical Collaboration Unit, invited us to reflect on the legacy of the founder and main inspirer of this initiative, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro. He recalled that this past May 23, 1963, a plane took 29 Cuban doctors, four dentists, 14 nurses and seven health technicians to Algeria to offer permanent services to the local population. This event marked the beginning of a new form of solidarity and internationalism that surprised the world.

Cabrera affirmed that the objective of Cuban health professionals during all these decades has been to save lives both in Cuba and in the rest of the world. Currently, 22,861 Cuban health specialists are providing services in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Of these, 9,049 are doctors, and 64% are women.

Cuban health workers have served the most needy populations, consulted more than 2.255 million people, performed more than 16 million surgeries and have assisted in more than five million births. Cabrera pointed out that this is a source of pride and satisfaction for the Cuban people, where these valuable and qualified workers come from, true protagonists of this history, in the maximum expression of José Martí’s thought that “Homeland is Humanity.”
