Nine Antillean manatees generated an emergency between Puerto Wilches and Sábana de Torres, in Santander, when they were trapped in the low waters of the Magdalena River. For this reason, local farmers had to relocate the manatees to other nearby places.

In that sense The Magdalena Medio Manatee Stranding Network, together with the local communities of Los Chorros, El Cerrito and Campo Duro, managed to relocate nine manatees that had been trapped in the Piruétano channel of the Magdalena Riverwhen they made their transit from the place known as Cuatro Bocas to deeper waters.

“The Magdalena Medio Manatee Stranding Network, together with the communities of Los Chorros, El Cerrito and Campo Duro, and in collaboration with CAS and Cabildo Verde, has carried out a verification visit due to the emergency caused by the stranding. of nine manatees during their transit through the Piruétano channel. Thanks to the efforts of the local community, the manatees were relocated to adjacent pools. However, the danger for this species and for biodiversity in general remains imminent, considering previous incidents with the Ichthyofauna.”explained the Middle Magdalena Manatee Stranding Network.

The manatee stranding network explained that it is crucial to remove the sediments that obstruct the flow of water between Puerto Wilches and Sabana de Torres and eliminate obstacles that prevent navigability to guarantee the safety of the manatees. In addition, daily monitoring of at least one hour in the morning is recommended to verify the good condition of the manatees in the area.

On February 19, residents and fishermen in Barrancabermeja found a dead manatee of approximately 2 months old in the San Silvestre swamp, El Tesoro sector. The animal was found by fishermen and was the second case recorded in 2024.

Yuli Velásquez, representative of the Santander Fishermen’s Federation, He said the fishermen who found the manatee’s lifeless body gave him birdSW.
