The day of ecological overdraft comprises the date of the year on which the Earth or in this case a country consumes the resources it plans to use in a full year. Unfortunately Chili once again it reached overdraft and almost seven months earlier than it should have.
A couple of days ago, last Thursday, May 23, our country positioned itself as the first in Latin America to exceed this limit. According to records from previous years, Chile usually reaches the ecological overdraft in May.
2023 surpassed the planet’s resource capacity on May 15, and although this year it was 8 days late, this delay is far from encouraging, taking into account that We are only in the fifth month of 2024.
Ecological overdraft in Chile
This year Chile is once again the first country in the region to reach ecological overdraft. This measurement is carried out by Global Footprint Network, a group of experts that determines the dates on which different countries reach their limit. They do this through measuring consumption compared to biological regeneration capacity.
According to your analysis, our country is the number 27 to enter the ranking this year, below Qatar United States, Canada, Denmark, among others. According to the organization, if resources were consumed in the world like we do in Chile 2.5 planets would be needed to supply it.
When is Earth Overshoot Day?
Like every country, the planet also has a specific day in which the resources available for one year are exhausted. The stipulated date for 2024 is 5th June.
