Camagüey, Cuba. – At the Cándido González stadium, where his hits so many times filled the baseball fans with joy, the people of Camagüey accompanied the relatives of Miguel Cuevas Piedra, in the farewell of the once stellar baseball player, who defended the colors of Cuba, and of the Sugar, Oriental, Farmer and Camagüey teams.

The posthumous tribute was attended by Sports Glories, prominent former athletes, coaches, the new generations that are being trained in schools, members of the province’s teams, leaders of various organizations and sectors, fans, and in transit to the East, the referees who will act in the next sub-series of Cuban baseball.

The teachings of Miguel Cuevas are not forgotten, says Felipe Sarduy, for whom it was “more than a companion and friend, a brother”.

“I remember when I started, in the Third National Series, Cuevas was the one who taught me and opened the doors for me in every way, in the sporting part, about the social conduct that we had to maintain, discipline, respect for the referees, the public and one’s own colleagues; And from then on, that for me was like a law.”.

It was also a commitment, because he spoke with my father, who were friends; and with parents involved, for one it was an inviolable commitment, and that happened to me with Cuevas. I achieved everything he told me, I was never cautioned in any game in the 21 National Series in which I participated; I never had differences with my teammates or other teams; and I thank Cuevas for that.

He will continue to be remembered as a teacher, says Felipe Sarduy, “And I tell the new generations that they can count on me to study and learn about the life of Miguel Cuevas. To his children, the ones I saw growing up with him; which means that in his house, as a father, he was excellent and an example in the training of those boys; That is to say, all these attributes have made so many people, of all ages, come to share the pain with the family.”.

Juan José Cuevas, one of Don Miguel’s sons, followed the sporting path as a referee, “He spent a lifetime with sports, he instilled in us, above all, iron discipline. He was very demanding, and he said that to achieve something you had to be very disciplined. We children believe that we have fulfilled him. He will follow his example and his teachings, discipline and sacrifice, to become a star, like him.”.

Luis Ulacia, once a stellar baseball player, says that “One of the great aspirations I had was to meet Miguel Cuevas personally; and I had that possibility and to be part as if I were part of his family ».

It is a hard loss for Cuba, and very painful; But, the most important thing is to have him in our hearts, because he was worthy, and an example as an athlete, as a baseball player, as a person, as a friend, and as a father. He deserves all the honors.

Miguel Cuevas, one of the founders of the National Series, an outfield player and right-handed hitter with great offensive power, will also be remembered for his performances in international competitions, among which the 1963 Pan American Games stand out, when he hit three home runs in the same match, a current record for those tournaments.

On Friday, May 24, the star baseball player Sol Miguel Cuevas Piedras, Glory of Cuban Sports, died in this city at the age of 89; who debuted in the First National Baseball Series, at the age of 26, on January 14, 1962, at the Latin American Stadium; and he said goodbye to active sport on November 21, 1974, at the Cándido González Morales stadium, with the presence of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro.

Don Miguel’s legacy transcends the playing field, and the people of Camagüey say goodbye to their Illustrious Son.
