The meeting between the Government and the national universities to update the budget ended

After months of complaints and a massive march that took over downtown Buenos Aires last month, the national universities reportedly obtained a 270% increase in operating expenses in a meeting between representatives of the rectors and the Government. This is the same update that the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) two weeks ago, so it decided to suspend the budget emergency.

As far as he could know THE NATION From sources familiar with the meeting, the adjustment “will be 270% in equal installments from June.” The Secretary of Education, Carlos Torrendell, and the Undersecretary of University Policies, Alejandro Álvarez, once again received the authorities of the National Interuniversity Council (CIN), the body that brings together the authorities of the houses of higher education that depend on the national State.

The rectors are now evaluating the proposal in a virtual meeting of the executive committee and will then issue a statement. It is also expected that, as happened in previous meetings, the Government will disseminate some communication.

The presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, had announced last Wednesday in his usual press conference that the adjustment in operating expenses of around 270% for the other national universities would be formalized today. Then, the Human Capital portfolio reported that it would receive the CIN authorities today “in order to resume the joint work agenda around the update of the 2023/2024 university budget.”

“They will seek to agree on the creation of a commission to prepare the 2025 budget and will analyze the existing measures to deepen the transparency of the funds that are transferred to university institutions and due compliance with the renditions of said expenses,” they announced from Capital Humano.

They had also announced that they would evaluate “the situation of researchers, shared administration centers with Conicet and infrastructure for the development of research” and the “state of the University Infrastructure Plan, budgetary restrictions and the rationalization of the funds granted by the Undersecretary of University Policies (SSPU).”

These are two of the five points that the rectors demanded from the Government and had advanced at the event in Plaza de Mayo during the federal university march, on April 23. After the massive call, the rectors had already met with the Government on April 30, when they “made progress in the dialogue,” but there was no concrete proposal from the authorities.

This finally arrived on the eve of the special session called by the UCR block in the Chamber of Deputies to discuss university financing and after the Government agreed only with the UBA – whose visible face is its vice-rector and radical leader Emiliano Yacobitti – to update its operating expenses, as well as a 300% update for university hospitals and related functions to the healthcare area. This caused the 60 remaining study houses to denounce discrimination and demand the same increase.
