La Rioja leads the national ranking in demand for more working hours

RADIO FENIX spoke about this topic with university professor and economist Mag. Nicolás Casas, who through a study determined that the Capital city is at the head of the national measurement of demanding underemployment.

These are people who work less than 35 hours a week and want to work longer for salary reasons. According to Casas, “the latest publications of INDEC data on everything related to the employment status, drew attention especially to the issue of demanding underemployment, which is one of the highest rates of the first quarter,” he said.

“This means that the underemployed are those who work less than 35 hours per week and are divided into two parts: the demanders and non-demanders, the first are those who work less than what is considered normal and are in search of more hours. and the second is the one who is satisfied with the hours worked, what happens is that the underemployed claimants in La Rioja double the rate at the national level.” He explained

The Capital city appears at the head of this measurement with 14.5% of demanding underemployment, followed by Greater Córdoba with 12.2%, Jujuy 12.1% and Tucumán 11%.

At the other extreme are: Viedma 1.3, Río Cuarto 1.4% and Comodoro Rivadavia 2.2%.

Another interesting fact that emerges from the study is that the city of La Rioja is well above the national average, where the underemployed job seekers are positioned at 6.8%.

It must be considered that we are talking about the latest official data for 2023, so the price increases and layoffs in the first quarter of this year should have triggered all these negative indicators.

The data corresponds to the quarterly employment report prepared by INDEC. The period analyzed is the fourth quarter of 2023 (October, November and December).

This measurement evaluates the 31 main urban centers in the country, meaning it does not include the rest of the towns in La Rioja, only the Capital city.
