The senator of the Historical Pact, Isabel Cristina Zuletasparked a great national discussion this week due to statements in which he assured that a sector related to the Government would be seeking to promote the re-election of President Gustavo Petro.

That idea did not sound very good among his supporters and even in the National Government. However, the representative David Racero He placed another proposal on the table: extending the presidential term, “one or two more years,” he said this Wednesday.

President Gustavo Petro assured last night, May 28, that he is not interested in re-election and stated that, on the contrary, previous leaders did take advantage of that figure.

On the other hand, the Minister of the Interior, Luis Fernando Velascoassured that neither the Government nor President Petro are thinking about re-election, but rather about solving the problems facing the country and achieving approval in Congress of the proposed reforms.

However, Racero, from the Historical Pact and one of those closest to the House of Nariño, assured that instead of talking about re-election, he should consider extend the term of office of President Gustavo Petro.

In Colombia, the presidential term is 4 years and President Gustavo Petro would end his term in 2026. Racero was not clear about what would be the way to extend the president’s term, but it would possibly be related to the Government’s constituent proposal.

“I don’t believe in re-election, I like the idea of extending the mandate one or two more years,” said the congressman in his X account. Racero is one of the congressmen closest to President Petro. In fact, they would meet every week in the Palace in what they have called the “political committee” and which is also attended by Senator María José Pizarro.
