It has taken a while, but the summer heat knocks on the door of La Rioja and it seems that it intends to enter suddenly, with a kick on the door. After the most unstable May in recent years – in addition to the constant thermal roller coaster it has been extraordinarily humid, the rainiest since 2008, above the 70 liters per square meter collected – the first blow to the thermometers is announced for only a few days after the Government of Spain activated last week the ‘National Plan for Preventive Actions for the Effects of Excess Temperature on Health’.

The protocol, which has just released an updated map of extreme heat thresholds, sets new maximums for La Rioja –34.5º in Logroño; 34.2º on the banks of the Ebro; and 31.9 in the mountains – which will be far exceeded this week, according to the forecasts managed by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) for the coming days in the region.

The increase in temperatures is predicted to be the most intense. This Monday, the mercuries will rise to 25 degrees in Haro, 28 in Calahorra and 29 in Logroño, more than five degrees above yesterday’s records. But the worst would be yet to come, since the maximum temperatures would be around 35 degrees on Wednesday, so as not to drop below that figure for the rest of the week, with Thursday and Friday being two especially torrid days in which temperatures could touch even the 40 degree barrier. Predictions point to 38 degrees in Logroño and 39 in Calahorra, in a first heat wave without respite in any area of the region. In fact, the Aemet forecasts also place the Riojan mountains above the new risk thresholds: in Villoslada de Cameros 32 degrees are announced for Thursday.
