Fundación Ecolec, a non-profit organization that focuses its activity on the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), managed in La Rioja the figure of 621 tons of said waste during 2023, which represents the collection of 6.04 kilos per habitant.

According to Europa Press, for Luis Moreno, general director of Fundación Ecolec, this data “highlights the commitment of Rioja residents to recycling, the environment and the circular economy.”

On the other hand, of the total tons managed in La Rioja (621), the vast majority corresponds to the domestic sphere (520) while the rest (101) belongs to the professional sphere. According to the United Nations, the generation of electronic waste in the world is increasing five times faster than its recycling. In 2022, a record of 62 million tons was broken, a figure that would fill 1.55 million 40-ton trucks, according to the report The Global E-Waste Mionitor 2024. The generation of this waste grows by 2.6 million tons every year , so in 2030 the total generation can reach up to 82 million tons.

Of the electronic waste recycled in La Rioja, the majority (520 tons) corresponds to the domestic sphere

«There is much evidence that shows that recycling our electronic waste is essential. For example, a poorly recycled refrigerator emits greenhouse gases into the atmosphere equivalent to the emissions of a car over 15,000 kilometers,” emphasizes Luis Moreno.
