During the Health Forum and 30th Pharmaceutical Forum of the National Association of Businessmen of Colombia (Andi), at the Cartagena de Indias Convention Center, More than 2,000 representatives of the health sector in the country discussed the current crisis that the system is going through.

Specifically, according to various studies, it is estimated that the deficit is equivalent to 1% of the national GDP, which would correspond to a figure that until 2023 would range between $9 billion and $14 billion; but, additionally, it is estimated that in 2024 the additional missing budget would be more than $4.3 billion.

Andi’s Vice President of Health, Anwar Rodríguez, made an analysis of the health system in Colombia and pointed out that the structural problem suffered by this sector has not been resolved and that it must be addressed comprehensively: structural definancing.

Likewise, he pointed out that there is uncertainty due to the evident deterioration of the system, which is reflected in aspects such as the intervention of 7 EPS that concentrate 53.3% of the population and 52.5% of the resources, and the fact that that 3 more EPS asked to withdraw voluntarily.

“It is a reality that, with or without reform, the health system requires more resources to meet people’s health needs. We know that we are facing greater spending pressures derived from the aging of the population, changes in the epidemiological profile and the greater demand for health services, which in itself already amounts to some 800 million services per year, translated into surgeries, delivery of medications, exams, consultations, among others,” Rodríguez explained.

However, he called to rescue confidence in the sector. “We must recover the pride of belonging to the health sector, as well as the vision that has characterized us. That pride and vision allowed us all to come together and work as a team to face the greatest health challenge of the last century during the pandemic. Now we must do the same to resolve this new crisis,” he asserted.

Finally, he invited us to reflect and build proposals around the health system and said: “The reality of the health system is different from the one we knew and created for more than 30 years, but it is precisely in these moments of uncertainty when the opportunity arises to innovate. In this, Andi plays a fundamental role by facilitating an environment conducive to developing ideas and solutions that develop that system.”

The event has the participation of more than 50 experts from the public, productive and academic sectors, who will discuss the challenges and perspectives of the health system, over three days.
