In a surprising change of plans, the President Gustavo Petro announced this Saturday, from Stockholm (Sweden), that will not attend the Peace Conference on Ukraine to be held in Zurich (Switzerland) and that, instead, will return “immediately” to Colombia.

The president explained that, in his opinion, the peace conference is “aligned with the war.”

“What we have found in relation to the Peace Conference in Switzerland is that it is basically an alignment on the side of war and “We do not agree with that and that is why I have decided to suspend my visit and the invitation to the conference in Switzerland because Latin America does not want more war,” the president said to the media.

Furthermore, on his X account (formerly Twitter) he also stated that “the scenario of the Swiss forum It is not a free forum to discuss the paths to peace between Russia and Ukraine. “Its conclusions are already predetermined.”

The president had planned to meet at the conference with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, meeting that was also canceled due to his announcement of not showing up at the event.

In his dialogue with the media, the head of state said that he is willing to “participate in conferences that are freely dedicated to seeking paths to peace and not to building blocks for war.” “We are not with war, we are with peace, so I will not go to Switzerland, we are heading immediately to Colombia,” he concluded.

Petro announced the change in his agenda in the middle of his visit to the grave of Olof Palme, a Swedish politician murdered in 1986.

“We come here, to pay tribute to Olof Palme, basically because we are talking about a person who, in conditions of practically a nuclear war and in a country that was exactly almost on the border between the two blocs in the Cold War, decided to raise the flag of peace, decided an activity of social justice with the so-called Third World, decided that Europe and that the United Nations and the world should move towards true peace and not towards war. They murdered him for that,” said the president.

In his message on the social network he also called on Europe to ““debate the ways to shorten the war and not to extend it.”

“Dialogue between Russia and Ukraine is essential. The establishment of a nuclear-free security zone that physically separates NATO from Russia, that allows the permanent security of the former Soviet nations and Eastern Europe, absolute respect for the Russian and Ukrainian peoples within Ukraine and Russia. The prudence of the European Union in its expansion so as not to unleash war,” he wrote in his message.

“The government of change Colombia will participate in every effort to build dialogue and peace between Russia and Ukraine and to stop the genocide on the Palestinian people. It is international law that has to be reestablished and deepened and not the constitution of blocks of countries for war,” Petro concluded.
