Boric to Milei for the Argentine solar panels in Chilean territory: “Either they take them out or we take them out”

Gabriel Boric, president of Chile, reported this Monday from Paris, the last stop on his tour to Europe, that he spoke with the Argentine president, Javier Milei, about the controversial military base that Argentina wants to build in the extreme south of Chilean territory. , demanding “that this be resolved in the shortest possible time.” Boric explained: “We learned some time ago that Argentina, when installing a military base in the Patagonia region, installed solar panels in Chilean territory. We received an apology from the Argentine Foreign Ministry, but I would like to express to you very clearly that borders are not something that can be ambiguous and that it is a basic principle of respect between countries. Therefore, they must remove those solar panels as soon as possible or we are going to do it,” Boric warned.

The Chilean, from the left, provided details of the conversation with the Argentine, from the extreme right: “I mentioned it to President Milei and he told me that he was going to send it to his Minister of Foreign Affairs. [Diana Mondino]. I imagine that we are not going to have problems in this regard, but it is a wrong signal, a signal that we do not like. Therefore, what we demand is that this be resolved in the shortest possible time, and I insist, otherwise we are going to do it,” Boric said after a private meeting with 28 members of the High-Level Mechanism of DSB 4, a committee of the United Nations focused on the quality of education.

At the end of April, on the 29th, the Argentine Navy inaugurated the renovation of its facilities at a border post in Tierra del Fuego. But they crossed Chilean territory by more than three meters, as confirmed by the Directorate of Borders and Limits of the Chilean Foreign Ministry. The construction is carried out in a strategic location, because it is located at the eastern mouth of the Strait of Magellan.

Boric recalled this Monday that “with Argentina we have an excellent relationship between States and it is important to maintain that relationship and not make escalating statements or try to get creative about this.” And he deepened that his objective is not to strain relations to the extent that Argentina removes the panels from Chilean Patagonian territory: “What we have to do here is respect the border, that is what we are demanding regarding our territory. And as I said: either they take them out or we take them out as soon as possible. But with Argentina we are united by many things, therefore, I do not intend for us to escalate tension between relations regarding this, as long as it is resolved as soon as possible.”
