Juan Carlos Morales Ruíz, manager of the XM National Dispatch Center, reported that, in May 2024, The energy demand in Colombia was 6,940.24 GWh.

This means that it increased 1.45% compared to national consumption in May 2023, when demand was 6,845.51 GWh.

It should be noted that, of the ten regions of the country, The one with the highest energy consumption was Caribe with 1,978.16 GWhfollowed by Center with 1,625.93 GWh, and by East with 987.25 GWh.

Among the economic activities with the highest share of energy demand in the unregulated market for May 2024 compared to May 2023, the following stand out: Manufacturing industries with 842.51 GWh and Exploitation of mines and quarries with 638.51 GWh, which They represent 39.72% and 30.1% of unregulated demand, respectively.

On the other hand, so far in 2024 and ending May 31, there was a growth of 5.54% in energy demand from the SIN compared to the same period in 2023.

It is important to keep in mind that the growth in demand for electrical energy is calculated as the weighted average of the growth of the different types of days (commercial, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays). With this type of calculation, the fluctuations that occur in the monthly monitoring are reduced, caused by the dependence of energy consumption in relation to the number of days presented in the month of analysis.

Discriminated by type of consumer, Compared to the same month of the previous year, in residential and small business consumption (regulated market) there was a growth of 3.0%, equivalent to 136.46 GWh.

For its part, in industry and commerce consumption (unregulated market) there was a decrease of -1.86%, equivalent to -41.95 GWh.

Energy demand by regions in Colombia

Guaviare is the region of the country with the greatest growth in demand for electrical energy in May 2024.

It had an increase of 12.84%, followed by Chocó with 3.59%, Caribbean with 3.1%, Center with 2.28%, Oriente with 0.76%, THC (Tolima, Huila and Caquetá) with 0. 51%, CQR (Caldas, Quindío and Risaralda) with 0.49%, Antioquia with 0.45% and South with -0.63%.

The region that presented the lowest growth in its energy consumption was Valle with -1.92%.
