After a week of marches and protests, the Colombian Federation of Education Workers confirmed this Thursday, June 20, that the national teachers’ strike was lifted. The entity’s decision comes after the collapse of the statutory education law in Congress.

“We achieved the objective, we sank this project. “We made the decision to suspend the permanent national strike of the Colombian teachers,” the leader initially expressed. from Plaza de Bolívar, in the center of Bogotá.

Then he added: “The struggles in the streets and the mobilization led to the collapse of this project. It is clear in this great purpose that our fight is strategic, that we are not going to give up. “This tricky situation was intended to involve teachers to break stability.”

Ayala finally asked all educators in Colombia to be alert to future projects in the next legislatures, mainly with that of educational bonuses, promoted by Paloma Valencia, senator of the Democratic Center.

“No mixed education, no hybrid education, no tertiary education, because that is the purpose: the privatization of education. “Take State resources for privatizations and set up what is called the business,” he concluded.

It should be mentioned that the president of Congress, Iván Name, confirmed this Wednesday that the education reform, which was pending its last debate in the Senate plenary, was not scheduled, as he pointed out that it was practically impossible to address that discussion when there were three more presentations.

Given this decision, the initiative was formally sunk due to lack of processing, so the opposition directly blamed the Petro Government for failing to comply with the agreements that had been agreed upon during the third debate in the First Commission.

“We have not reached consensus, so it will not be on the agenda. That means that without consensus it cannot be processed. When there are three presentations, a minimum agreement is needed and we are one day away from finishing the legislature, so it will be very difficult”Name said.

The Petro Government would have to file the project again after July 20 (when the new legislature begins). At the moment, it is not clear if the Executive will present it once again on that date and with the adjustments that are being requested from different sectors.
