With the last day of the first legislature of 2024, several bills were sunk, such as the statutory education law and the one that sought better traceability of meat and thus prevent it from being one of the causes of deforestation.

Another of the projects that sank was the one that sought to prohibit fracking in Colombia, something that aroused the displeasure of the Minister of the Environment, Susana Muhamad.

Through a statement, he regretted that this project, for which more than 174,000 signatures had been collected, had not been scheduled by the Fifth Commission of the House of Representatives, after having advanced in its first two debates.

Muhamad blamed the president of that commission for not bringing it up for discussion. “He is sinking because the president of the Fifth Commission did not put it up for discussion, even though he already had the presentations,” he assured.

Faced with this situation, the Minister of Environment assured that The project will be filed again in the next legislature with the presentation and the document that had been approved in the Senate.

Fracking, as is known, is a technique in which pressurized water is used, with a mixture of sand, to break and generate cracks in rocks that are kilometers deep in the earth and these release, so to speak, the gas or oil they have stored.

However, it has caused intense debate, as some evidence suggests that it could contaminate some of the water sources where it is carried out. Those who oppose it often reiterate that much more information is required about its impacts before it is implemented in the country.
