The mayor of Maipú, Tomas Vodanovic, expressed his indignation at the amount of garbage found in the Santa Marta canal, a situation aggravated by the intense frontal system that affects the central-southern area of the country. The heavy rains have caused flooding in several points, and Maipú is one of the most affected communes due to the increase in the flow of the canal and the danger of an eventual overflow.

Through his Instagram account, Vodanovic regretted the situation and asked the residents of the sector to be aware and not throw garbage into the canal. “I don’t know in what tone to say it”He commented, visibly annoyed. “This morning five refrigerators were found dumped like garbage. Seriously, to the citizens, let’s have a little conscience. “Canals are not landfills”the mayor emphasized.

Municipal officials have worked intensively in the area to remove accumulated garbage. Despite efforts throughout the night, Vodanovic reported that this morning the canal was again full of debris. “That a canal is being cleaned every day speaks very badly of our society (…) It is brutal”he added.

As the hours pass, the flow of the Santa Marta canal has been increasing, generating fear among residents, since around 50 millimeters of water are expected to fall in the capital during the day. The mayor warned that they could suspend traffic on the Camino a Melipilla, one of the points in Maipú that lacks a rainwater collector, which aggravates the risk of flooding if the canal were to overflow.

Vodanovic’s message is clear: Greater awareness and responsibility is needed on the part of inhabitants to prevent canals from becoming garbage dumps. The accumulation of waste not only affects the environment, but also increases the risk of natural disasters in emergency situations like the current one.
