Vaca Muerta 2024 inflation is already the second highest in the country

The increase in prices in the province of Neuquén was 6% more than that registered in the country during the first five months of the year. The phenomenon is attributable to the increase derived from the relative salary advantage of the largest formal private sector, the oil sector, and also to the cost of freight and artificial barriers such as health, which increases the price of meat.

In the first five months of this year, Neuquén appears after the city of Buenos Aires and, if the price increase from May to May is compared, the province of Vaca Muerta is one step behind Río Negro, which appears at the top..

In the cumulative comparison, the rise in the country’s Consumer Price Index, according to INDEC, was 71.9%. There are three districts with accumulated increases greater than that level: Autonomous City of Buenos Aries, CABA (80.2%), Neuquén (78.0%) and Córdoba (72.0%). At the opposite extreme, Chaco (61.2%) and San Luis (59.7%) register the slightest accumulated increase.

The economic consulting firm Politikon Chaco compared the price increases in 11 provinces, which are those that have public organizations that are in charge of measuring inflation, and determined that in the interannual comparison (from May 2023 to the same month of this year), the increase in the country’s CPI according to the INDEC was 276.4%.

There are four districts with increases higher than that level: Río Negro (300.7%, the only province to exceed 300%), Neuquén (282.6%), Santa Fe (282.2%) and CABA (280.9%). At the opposite extreme, Mendoza and Chaco registered the slightest increases (270.5% and 268.3%, respectively).

The consulting firm pointed out that it is the first time since September 2020 that all the provinces with their own CPI surveys show a cut in the interannual growth rate compared to the previous month.

He indicated that in the country, there are eleven subnational jurisdictions that have their own preparation of the territorial CPI. These are CABA, Chaco, Córdoba, Jujuy, Mendoza, Neuquén, Río Negro, San Juan, San Luis, Santa Fe and Tucumán. San Juan was not considered in this comparative report, since said province is updating its index and therefore has not yet updated the results for 2023.

He clarified that not all provinces have the same way of presenting their information: although some follow the same categorization carried out by INDEC, Others do it in a different way, so the same division is not necessarily comparable to each other (example: Food), “But it is also a very useful way to evaluate price behavior in the different districts.”
