The PSOE is heading towards a congress in the fall

After a very turbulent week for the PSOE of La Rioja, the Assembly of the Logroño Group that took place this Saturday morning took on singular importance. The current situation was marked by two consecutive resignations: a week ago, the secretary general of the Logroño socialists, Víctor Moratinos, resigned from his position in the regional Executive and, two days later, Concha Andreu announced, through a brief press release, that she was leaving the regional Parliament and that she would not run for a new term as general secretary of the PSOE in La Rioja.

In the Assembly, as this newspaper has learned, Moratinos has explained the reason for his resignation. As he already explained in a letter addressed to the members, which was not made public, his resignation had been influenced by the “interference” of both Andreu and the Secretary of Organization, María Marrodán, in the functioning of the Logroño socialist group. . He also denounced the “ignorance” to which he has felt subjected in decision-making, despite the fact that Moratinos formally held the position of deputy secretary of Organization.

However, looking to the future, the big issue for the Assembly has been Andreu’s decision to postpone his succession to an ordinary congress that could take even more than a year. Many voices have asked, in this sense, to speed up the deadlines so that it could be held in November or December. Although the statutes generally prescribe that ordinary regional congresses must take place after the national one, scheduled for the end of 2025, they could be held as early as November with Ferraz’s permission. There is always the possibility of calling an extraordinary one, although its conclusions would have to be subsequently endorsed by an ordinary congress.

Andreu, ready

In the Assembly, Andreu thanked the members for their support and stated that he had felt supported throughout his entire mandate. Furthermore, she has shared the need not to delay excessively the celebration of an ordinary congress. In the event that there is no federal conclave this year, the general secretary intends to speak with Ferraz so that the situation can be resolved before the end of the year.

In any case, the idea of prolonging an interim situation beyond this year raises fears in many activists, who ask that the deadlines be accelerated as much as possible, so that not only can a successor with guarantees be found, but also a new political project.

The PSOE now opens, not without uncertainty, a new era. In the next plenary session of the regional Parliament, Concha Andreu, who will continue as a senator, will no longer sit in her seat. Her place will be taken, after the resignation of María Marrodán, by Daniel Carrillo, mayor of Brieva and secretary of Strategy, Studies, Programs and Electoral Action.
