That national obsession that we know as alfajor had its party this long weekend in Avellaneda: the Argentine Alfajor Championship 2024 that took place at the Municipal Exhibition Grounds. In this context, more than 350 exponents of this candy competed in 18 categories but only one took first place in the entire contest.

According to the jury of this event made up of chefs, pastry chefs and tasters specialized in this product, the most outstanding alfajor turned out to be that of Romah, a firm from the Buenos Aires city of Chivilcoy that won with its copy made with almond flour tapas dipped in white chocolate and filled with pistachio cream.

In addition to this contest, in the first Argentine Alfajor Championship, the public was able to enjoy a wide variety of flavors and styles of this product, as well as a comfortable gastronomic space with FoodTruck. Among the featured activities, a giant alfajor was made and there were masterclasses with prestigious pastry chefs and informative talks on commercial qualification for those interested in learning more about the alfajor industry.

All Romah brand products are characterized by their abundant filling: between 40 and 50 grams of dulce de leche, pistachio cream or quince, depending on the variety chosen. Although this firm had also presented a classic alfajor (made of dulce de leche and dipped in chocolate) that won gold, the champion turned out to be the most gourmet: one with pistachio cream dipped in white chocolate and with tapas made with almond flour .

“It is a new product that we arrived at 20 or 30 days ago after doing many tests. We wanted to present something very different,” Julián Bascaran, the entrepreneur who, together with his wife Micaela de los Ríos, is carrying out this project in the Buenos Aires city of Chivilcoy, tells Clarín Gourmet.

This couple of accountants launched the Romah brand in a pandemic. “We bought the machinery and started. When we started producing and we didn’t sell to anyone. But 3 months ago it was the first edition of the Alfajor World Cup and there we won a prize that made us known in our city and we started selling more. Then there was the National Alfajor Festival that takes place in Córdoba and we received another award and there we bought more machinery with loans from our family,” says Julián.
