La Guajira: Suspension of Windpeshi Wind Farm investigated

The control body will take action after the suspension of the project, where Enel Colombia has invested millionaire resources.

The Bogotá Comptroller’s Office reported that it will take action after the suspension of the Windpeshi Wind Farm project in La Guajira, where the company Enel Colombia has invested more than $1 billion, without the project having come into operation.

In order to evaluate Enel Colombia’s fiscal management and understand the reasons behind the suspension, the comptroller of Bogotá, Julián Mauricio Ruiz, carried out an Administrative visit to the megaproject located between the municipalities of Maicao and Uribia.

This diligence was ordered by the Public Services Sector Directorate of the Comptroller’s Office as part of a Special Inspection Action, which seeks to evaluate the efficiency, effectiveness and economy of Enel Colombia’s actions in relation to the Windpeshi Wind Project.

According to the control entity, the decision to carry out the Special Inspection Action and the Administrative Visit arose after Enel Colombia indefinitely suspended the construction of the Wind Farm in La Guajira, citing difficulties in guaranteeing the construction rhythms of the project.

“Until now we have found what is evident, the Windpeshi Wind Farm, with an investment of more than $1 billion by Enel Colombia, has not generated a kilowatt of energy. This means that the investment of public resources has not fulfilled its purpose.“explained comptroller Julián Mauricio Ruiz.

In this regard, Enel explained that The project had already reached 25.5% progress in execution since its start in December 2020.but was suspended in May 2023 due to constant de facto routes and high expectations of local communities, which would have caused significant delays in work schedules.

The Bogotá Comptroller’s Office concluded that is taking measures to investigate the suspension of the Windpeshi Wind Farm project in La Guajira and evaluate the fiscal management of Enel Colombia.
