The northern area of the capital has become the area with the highest levels of air pollution, according to data obtained from municipal monitors located in Chapultepec with Peripheral, Fray Diego de la Magdalena with Basque of Quiroga and of José de Gálvez avenue with highway 57.

Maximino Jasso Padrónholder of the Department of Ecology and Waste Management of the capital, explained that the air quality meters are already fully operational and have been calibrated to guarantee their accuracy.

“Our meters are in operation. We can now enter the telecommunications center in Centro Unión and verify both the air quality and the atmospheric weight,” said the official.

The head of Ecology highlighted the importance of having certification from the Federationa process they actively manage.

“We have put together a dossier to send to the Federation, seeking certification that gives us certainty of the validity of our data,” said Jasso Padrón.

This certification, managed by a specific laboratory of the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), is crucial to ensure the reliability of the measurements.

Despite the recent rains, which have contributed to improving air quality, the Department of Ecology and Waste Management remains on alert.

“The rains help a lot to maintain a healthy environment, but we continue with operational actions,” said Jasso Padrón.

The main source of pollution is greenhouse gases produced by industrial activity, although no recent complaints have been reported about the brickyards.

Last weekend, the northern area was also the scene of a fire in the Los Tules colonywhere a bank of materials and tires generated a large amount of smoke.

“We went to the scene and it was the only significant report on Sunday,” said Jasso Padrón.

The strategic location of the monitors in Chapultepec with Periférico, Fray Diego de la Magdalena with Vasco de Quiroga and Gálvez with Carretera 57 allows obtaining a detailed overview of the variations in air quality in different parts of the city. According to the official, the northern area is particularly vulnerable due to the accumulation of pollutants transported by southern winds.

“The winds arise from south to north and accumulate the cream of pollution in the northern area, where most of the clandestine garbage dumps are located,” he concluded.
