Insecurity put the installation of polling stations in district 5 at risk: INE

San Luis Potosí, SLP.- San Luis Potosí had the risk of not installing 26 boxes in the rural area of district 05, due to threats from organized crime groups, revealed Mónica Macías Guel, counselor of the Local Board of the National Electoral Institute (INE) in the State.

When taking stock of the election on June 2, Macías Guel mentioned that insecurity represented a very big challenge and put at risk the installation of 26 polling stations in the state, since there were threats against INE personnel and they were not allowed to do their work in the field.

“Specifically in mid-April of this year, in some local media, it was mentioned that there were criminal groups that were carrying out some shootings, this situation put at risk the integrity and work carried out by the INE field staff, specifically the electoral assistant trainers and supervisors of district 05,” he indicated.

“In the rural area of that district, they were threatened by these criminal groups and they were not allowed to carry out the delivery of appointments in the second stage of training, a situation that would mean that 26 polling stations could not be installed in that district,” explained the counselor

He highlighted that at the beginning the possibility was considered that, if the appointments could not be delivered in that area and if the 26 boxes could not be installed, special boxes could be installed.

However, he indicated that this was not one of the best options since, if special boxes were placed, it would increase the problems that these boxes represent in general terms.

He indicated that thanks to the efforts of Pablo Sergio Aispuro Cárdenas, Executive Member of the INE in the State, a security operation was carried out in the area, together with the support of the security forces, Army, National and State Guard, and the Police. Municipal of the Capital of Potosina.

“Everyone together supported the brigades and provided security support for the electoral assistant trainers in the area.”
