In 1858, in the Jewish neighborhood of Bologna, the Pope’s soldiers break into the Mortara house to kidnap their seven-year-old son, Edgardo. The nanny of this family had secretly baptized the little boy, so, according to papal law, he must receive a Catholic education or be considered an apostate. The film follows the family’s struggle to try to recover their son in the face of this action by the Catholic Church. With settings reminiscent of great baroque frescoes, this film mixes the dimensions of the intimate with the political.
