Pedro de la Hoz, the teacher › Culture › Granma

A memorable text by Eduardo Galeano speaks of human beings similar to little fires. Of those capable of influencing others, he said: “you can’t look at them without blinking and whoever approaches it lights up.”

One of them, born in Cienfuegos, 70 years ago, honored with his exemplary life, and with his work, the culture of his country, which is ours.

A journalist of the highest caliber, an encyclopedic intellectual, an all-terrain combatant, a teacher of youth and also of experts, a wise helmsman of the word, a soldier at the service of the Cuban Revolution, he also had, among his many virtues, bravery, to the same test when issuing his not always laudatory criteria, that in the face of death, which ended up defeating him, but not before fighting hard with an organic man who stood in front of her, and made her, not infrequently, stagger.

With an abysmal intelligence, cultivated at home and fueled by constant reading, he chose Granma to write for 36 years in its pages, and he dedicated himself to prestige them.

On June 5, the Grim Reaper wanted to take him away from us, and only took his body. There is no way to shake, neither his companions nor his people, the lyrics or the voice that he emitted with such high resonances and with such reason.

That day, upon learning of his goodbye, many of us’s voices broke, and not because we had nothing to say. The one who left remained in us in many ways, some indefinable.

Practical as it was, I wouldn’t want too much pomp for it. Let us share today, simply and naturally, here, in what was his second home, the way in which the man that Cuba knew as Pedro de la Hoz remained in us, and many, not by chance, called him Pedro de la Hoz and the Hammer.
The invitation is made.
