These types of telluric movements are natural, since Colombia, due to its geographical location, is prone to this type of natural phenomena. The country is a tectonically active region where several tectonic plates converge: the Nazca plate, the South American plate and the Caribbean plate. These tectonic interactions generate tensions and movements.

When these plates interact, seismic movements are generated in the region. In other parts of the country there are geological faults such as those in Bucaramanga or the Pacific Ring of Fire.

According to the Colombian Geological Service, around 2,500 earthquakes occur in the country per month.
