Colombia is one of the countries where the motorcycle market has a great impact on citizens, according to figures managed by Runt, in the country There are a little more than 11 million 500 thousand motorcycles registered, being the predominant vehicle above cars and trucks. However, they are also the means of transportation in which the most victims occur.

Taking into account the above, The Ministry of Transport has decided to implement a series of measures for the year 2025, in which owners must guarantee that their motorcycles have specific characteristics so that they can continue to circulate in national territory.

In this way, any new motorcycle that has been assembled in Colombia and does not have an always-on lighting system, ABS or CBS braking and tire certification, will not be able to be mobilized and would be exposed to fines or sanctions.

The objective of implementing the new features is precisely to avoid the high rates of vehicle accidents that Colombia currently has.

However, this important change has drivers who own older motorcycles in suspense, since they do not have the improvements required by the ministry within their structure.

However, the same Ministry of Transport pointed out that motorcycles under this denomination are old and do not have the advanced type of braking (ABS and CBS) They may move as required by the National Land Traffic Code (Law 769/2002).

According to the above, old vehicles will continue to circulate normally under the new conditions.

Advanced braking system

There are two types of advanced braking: ABS or CBS, both of which have been shown to provide greater safety when stopping the vehicle and prevent serious accidents.

ABS stands for Anti-lock Braking System, the main feature is that it prevents the wheels from locking when braking hard, thus avoiding losing control.

Regarding CBS, which is a Combined Braking System, its particularity is that it uses a lever or pedal so that when braking, both wheels are activated.

Lighting system

The new regulation requires that the motorcycle’s lighting system be always on permanently, even when the vehicle is not moving or parked at a traffic light. This is in order to be visible at all times to other cars and trucks.

Certified tires

New tires purchased must have the corresponding certification that guarantees safety for driving on different road surfaces nationwide.
