Free cultural agenda to celebrate Palmira’s 200th anniversary in Valle del Cauca

Palmira is celebrating its 200 years of republican life with a wide range of free cultural activities for residents and visitors. From June 27 to Sunday, June 30, the city is filled with historical and artistic events that invite the whole family to participate and enjoy this special occasion.

The cultural agenda began on Tuesday, June 25, with an inaugural event that included the presentation of the Departmental Band of the Valley and several formal events of the bicentennial in Bolívar Park, in front of the Nuestra Señora del Palmar cathedral.

Cultural events

On Friday, June 28th, at 7:30 pm, A “Storytelling Night” will be held at the Convention Center, with the presentation of the Ipialeño storyteller and comedian Cristian Fraga, inaugurating the oral storytelling cycle “Come, tell me, see.”

On Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th, from 2:00 in the afternoon, The Cuy Festival will be held at the chaza court in the La Carbonera sector, Zamorano neighborhood, where attendees will be able to taste this typical dish and enjoy exhibitions of Nariño culture.

The program will culminate with plays and puppets on Sunday, June 30, starting at 4:00 p.m., at the Ecolagos kiosk, with the presentation of “The Son of Water” by the local theater group Madretierra.

International events and tourist offer

These include the Palmira Salsa Go International Festival and the Pan American and South American Weightlifting Championships, with the participation of delegations from countries such as the United States, Ecuador, Venezuela, Argentina, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru. The outstanding athlete from Palmira, Miyareth Mendoza, world champion, was awarded the prize as the best female weightlifter during the closing ceremony of the sporting event.

Palmira also offers a rich tourist offer that includes gastronomy, nature tourism, history and culture. “Palmira is a municipality with a rich cultural heritage, such as the ancient Malagan culture, which settled in the town of El Bolo. “We have created a tourist route around this culture, with museums and historical sites,” explained Mayor Ramos.

Mayor Ramos invites everyone to discover the wonders of Palmira: “A green lung within the city, the most important Tropical Agriculture Research Center in the region and the gastronomic district of Rozo. We want people to know that they can enjoy bird watching, good food and practice paragliding in La Buitrera, where national and international championships of this sport are held,” concluded the president.

History of Palmyra

Although the territory of Palmira was founded in 1680 by Francisco Rengifo Salazar, the city was officially recognized as La Villa de las Palmas with the entry into force of Law 156 of June 25, 1824. This means that Palmira celebrates 344 years of foundation and 200 years of legal institution.
