THE ARGENTINE women’s beach volleyball team could not get its place in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The defeat against Paraguay by 3-1 in the final series of the South American Olympic Qualifier, played at the Los Pynandi World Cup Stadium, in Asunción, meant a important blow for the albiceleste delegation.
The tournament had started in the semi-finals for Argentina, which had won the first three games against Ecuador: in the first meeting Ana Gallay and Brenda Churín had defeated Stephany/Jasmin 2-0 (21-12 and 21-9), then Cecilia Peralta and Agostina Ghigliazza by 2-1 to Ariana/Karelys (17-21, 21-12 and 15-5), and to close the series Gallay/Churín had also defeated Ariana/Karelys by 2-0 (25-23 and 21-8) .
The final against Paraguay began with a loss for Peralta/Ghigliazza against Polleti/Michele (21-17 and 21-19) who also beat Gallay/Churín 2-0 in the third game (22-20 and 21-17), who had temporarily tied the series by beating Erika/Fio 21-10 and 21-16.
In the fourth game of the day, Argentina’s pair 2 had to win to force the Golden Set.Peralta/Ghigliazza started on top in the first set and in the second they had several match pointsbut they couldn’t close it and fell 31-29 against Erika/Fio. In the tie-break, the Paraguayan duo was superior and that’s how he stayed with the game and the long-awaited Olympic qualification by 15-10.
