On Tuesday night, an Israeli airstrike killed at least 10 people in the coastal city of Sidon in southern Lebanon, according to a report by the country’s national news agency. He said the attack injured at least 36 other people. Until recently, attacks on Sidon, one of Lebanon’s largest cities, and its surrounding areas have been rare.
Hezbollah said that in recent days its forces had clashed with Israeli soldiers near the border town of Kfar Kila and the mountain town of Khiam, well known in Lebanon as the former site of a prison camp run by Hezbollah allies. Israel during its two decades of occupation of southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese government converted the prison camp into a museum following Israel’s withdrawal in 2000, although it was later destroyed by an Israeli airstrike during the 2006 war in Lebanon.
Hezbollah’s claims could not be independently verified. The national news agency reported Wednesday that Israeli soldiers near Khiam were “trying to infiltrate the city under heavy fire” and that the Israeli air force had carried out multiple raids in the area.
