The Local Police of San Cristóbal de La Laguna presented this Wednesday, July 3, the specific unit that has been created in the municipality for the monitoring and care of victims of gender violence, all in coordination with the National Police.

The event was attended by the Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez; the Councillor for Citizen Security of the City Council, Cristina Ledesma; the First Deputy Mayor, Badel Albelo; and the Councillor for Social Welfare and Quality of Life, María Cruz. Also taking part was Javier Fleitas, inspector of the Local Police who will be in charge of coordinating this work team, integrated into the Comprehensive Monitoring System for Cases of Gender Violence (VioGén).

The Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, explained that “this action unit will become a reference resource for people who suffer this type of violence and for their families, guaranteeing proper follow-up of the case and compliance with judicial measures, if they exist.”

The mayor also mentioned that an advisory and support service will be provided to victims in legal proceedings, should they so request. Finally, he reported that the unit will initially be made up of six officers and an inspector.

In this regard, the Councillor for Citizen Security, Cristina Ledesma, explained that the police stations corresponding to the Local Police of La Laguna and the National Police will take on the cases depending on the level of risk, although support may be requested if necessary.

This unit is created based on the Protocol for collaboration and coordination between the State security forces and bodies and the Local Police forces for the protection of victims of domestic and gender violence. The Police Coordination Board has also been established, made up of representatives of both security forces, which will meet periodically to observe the effective compliance of this protocol, the monitoring of cases of gender violence in the municipality and other aspects related to this Unit.
