Hamas says it is exchanging “ideas” with mediators to end the war in Gaza

Hamas exchanged “some ideas” with mediators on ending Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian group said in a statement on Wednesday, citing an official source.

Earlier, Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency said Tel Aviv was considering Hamas’ response to a proposal that included a deal to release hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza.

“The hostage deal mediators have given the negotiating team Hamas’ response to the hostage deal outline. Israel is examining it and will respond to the mediators,” said a statement issued by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on behalf of the Mossad.

The statement did not give further details.

A source in Hamas, which has ruled Gaza for nearly two decades, said it had “exchanged some ideas with the mediating brothers” with the aim of stopping the war, but gave no further details.

Mediators including Egypt, Qatar and the United States have been trying for months to secure a ceasefire and the release of the 120 remaining hostages in Gaza, but their efforts have stalled.

Hamas says any deal must end the war and lead to a full Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza. Israel says it will accept only temporary pauses in fighting until the Palestinian group is eradicated.

The war began when Hamas gunmen stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages to Gaza, according to Israeli counts. Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed nearly 38,000 people, according to Gaza’s health ministry, and left the coastal enclave in ruins.
