Project Description by TOA associated architects

In its materialization of utopian concepts, this project expands the field of possibilities through a reconnection with the earth, an unlimited source of well-being and meaning.

Architectural features
Like a superposition of inhabited earth strata in the heart of the neighborhood, the unique adobe facades of this 42-unit building form a kind of backdrop for the exterior corridors.

These exterior corridors and balconies determine the typology of the plan, ensuring that all floors enjoy double exposure, while protecting the adobe facades from the elements. The duplex penthouses enjoy large peripheral terraces.

Between a pedestrian path and a shared garden, all floors are oriented towards open areas characterized by vegetation and a reassuring domestic scale.

Environmental behavior
The project is based on a sustainable approach, both in the choice of materials and construction processes as well as in the housing.

Projected as a model for a low-carbon approach, it is built from mud bricks, a recyclable material of geological origin. Local soil is used and this simple process significantly reduces its carbon footprint. The mud bricks used here come from the Dewulf artisanal brick factory, which uses little mechanisation and an open-air drying process.

At the floor level, the double-exposure layout favours natural West-East ventilation, thereby reducing the reliance on energy-intensive ventilation systems. Earth-based construction offers significant thermal and hygrothermal advantages, as it effectively regulates temperature while maintaining an optimal humidity balance, thus improving occupant comfort.

Social focus
The choice of raw earth in this project aims to promote the democratization of this material, which, although not regulated, has until now been more expensive than concrete.

In the context of contemporary architecture, it was essential to raise awareness of this issue among all stakeholders, i.e. the client, elected officials, the various construction trades and future buyers. Our advice enabled us to reassure all those involved about the use of this natural resource and to obtain their approval to proceed with the project with us.
