“Damaging winds, a dangerous storm surge, and torrential rainfall are expected across portions of the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize beginning Thursday night as Beryl approaches that area as a hurricane,” NHC warned.

The first hurricane of the Atlantic season remains a fearsome system with maximum sustained winds of 220 kilometers per hour, according to the NHC bulletin at 5:00 p.m. local time.

Mexico and Belize on alert for Beryl

Hurricane warnings, in addition to Jamaica, include the Cayman Islands and the coast of the Peninsula of Yucatanfrom Costa Maya to Chetumaland from Cancun to Cape Catoche.

Tropical storm warnings are also in effect for the coast of Belizefrom Chetumal to Belize City, in Central America.
