After intense debates and opposing positions, the Senate approved last night in second reading and with modifications, the bill Penal Codewhich contains more than 70 new types of crimes, but excludes grounds for abortion.

The legislative piece, which goes to the Chamber of Deputies, It contains 72 new articles that penalize murder for hire, femicide, genocide, bullying, damage with chemical substances, public and judicial bribery, harassment, corruption, domestic violence, and increases the maximum sentence from 30 to 40 years.

Of the 22 senators present, only Yvan Lorenzo y Faride Raful voted against the initiative, which is more than 20 years old.

After reading and approving the report on the project, Senator Faride Raful confirmed her position that the Penal Code should include the causes of abortion, which she considers a guarantee for the dignity of women.

Senator Iván Lorenzo spoke on this issue, pointing out that the bill does not protect women and asking that the code be reviewed article by article, a motion that was rejected by 20 senators.

While the senator Rogelio Genao He stated that with the approval of this project the Senate complies with a demand of Dominican society, which demands a Penal Code modern and in accordance with the Constitution.

Dionis Sánchez said that the code “is much better than the current one,” which dates back to 1884, and therefore he asked the national leadership, including the President of the Republic, legislators, businessmen, religious sectors and civil society, to support the piece, which is so needed by society.

Prior to the knowledge of the initiative, modifications to articles 188, 226, 114, 123, 136, 159, 160, 188 were approved, with greater penalties for violations.
